🕮 Understanding Types of Reading Comprehension Questions
Reading
comprehension is the ability to understand, interpret, and evaluate a text. In
school reading exercises, comprehension questions are usually grouped into four
levels:
1. Literal
Comprehension
Definition:
Literal comprehension means understanding the facts and information that
are directly stated in the text. Students find the answers exactly as
written — no guessing is needed.
Key Words: Who, What, When, Where, How many
Example:
Question: When was the school established?
Answer: The school was established in 2005.
2.
Reorganization
Definition:
Reorganization questions ask students to put together information from
different parts of the text — such as summarizing, classifying, comparing, or
sequencing ideas.
Key Words: Arrange, List, Summarize, Combine
Example:
Question: List the three main reasons mentioned
for starting the school.
Answer: To provide quality education, to help poor students, and to
promote local culture.
3. Inference
Definition:
Inference questions require students to read between the lines and find
meaning that is not directly stated. They must use clues from the text
and their own understanding to answer.
Key Words: Why do you think…, What can you
infer…, What does this suggest…
Example:
Question: Why do you think the writer feels
proud of the school?
Answer: Because it has helped many poor students get a good education.
4. Evaluation
Definition:
Evaluation questions ask students to make judgments or express opinions
about the ideas, values, or effectiveness of the text. Students use their own
reasoning and experiences.
Key Words: Do you agree…, What is your opinion…,
How effective…, Was it right…
Example:
Question: Do you agree that every village needs
such a school? Why or why not?
Answer: Yes, because rural areas need quality education for development.
